How exhibits are usually labeled
The Form I-140 instructions do not set one labeling format for the evidence in a petition. What matters is that every document is easy to find, and that your letter, your index and the documents themselves use the same labels.
Two styles are common. Labels by group (A-1, A-2, then B-1) keep related documents together and leave room to add one later without renumbering everything. Plain numbers (1, 2, 3) are simple for short packets and RFE responses.
Grouping your documents
Groups are for the reader. People often group EB-1A evidence by the evidence categories listed in the regulation, and EB-2 NIW evidence by topic, such as background, the proposed endeavor and support letters. In an RFE response, many people follow the order of the requests in the notice.
The generator does not decide what belongs in your case. It only numbers what you type, in the order you type it.
From a list to a finished index
An exhibit index usually shows each label, a short description and the pages where the exhibit starts and ends. Page numbers change every time a document moves, which is the slow part to keep right by hand. The Case Album packet tools add exact page numbers, dividers and PDF bookmarks, and update them when you reorder.
Frequently asked questions
Should exhibits be labeled with letters or numbers?
Either works when it is consistent. Letters by group (A-1, B-1) make it easy to add a document to one group later. Plain numbers are simple for a short response.
What goes in an exhibit index?
Usually the exhibit label, a short description of the document and the pages where it starts and ends in the packet.
Does this tool send my list anywhere?
