What makes a useful caption

USCIS does not prescribe a caption format for relationship photos. A practical caption names four things: what was happening, when (the exact date, or the month or year you can verify), where, and who is shown. Use the same name spellings as your forms.

Examples

“Family dinner · June 14, 2024 · Denver, Colorado · Sam Lee, Jordan Lee and Sam’s parents.” “Weekend visit · October 2023 · Toronto, Canada · Aisha Khan and David Chen.” “Wedding reception · May 18, 2022 · Austin, Texas · Priya Shah and Arjun Patel with family.”

Frequently asked questions

How should I caption photos for USCIS?

Write a short, factual line with the occasion, date, place and people shown. If you only know the month or year, say that instead of guessing a day.

Do USCIS photos need captions?

Captions are not formally required, but they explain what each photo shows, which helps a reviewer understand its context.
