How this checklist works

A K-1 case has two stages. First the U.S. citizen files Form I-129F with USCIS. After USCIS approves it, your fiancé(e) applies for the visa at a U.S. embassy or consulate. Tick off each list as you go.

Your official instructions come first. Follow the current I-129F instructions and your embassy's interview letter. They can ask for something this list does not show.

Stage 1: file Form I-129F with USCIS

Forms and fee

  • Form I-129F, completed and signed by the U.S. citizen
  • The filing fee shown on the USCIS form page
  • Form G-28, only if a lawyer or accredited representative helps you

Proof the petitioner is a U.S. citizen

  • One of these: U.S. birth certificate, Certificate of Naturalization or Citizenship, Form FS-240, or your unexpired U.S. passport

Proof you are both free to marry

  • Divorce decrees, annulment orders or death certificates that ended every earlier marriage, for both of you
  • Proof of any legal name change

Photos

  • One color passport-style photo of the U.S. citizen and one of the fiancé(e), taken within 30 days of filing

Proof you met in person in the 2 years before filing

  • Travel records from your visits: plane tickets, boarding passes, hotel bookings and passport stamps
  • Dated photos of the two of you together from those visits Make this part now
  • If you could not meet: proof for the waiver (a strict custom of your fiancé(e)'s culture, or extreme hardship)

Proof you plan to marry within 90 days

  • A signed statement from each of you saying you intend to marry within 90 days after your fiancé(e) arrives in the U.S.
  • Proof of your plans can help: engagement photos, a wedding venue booking or invitations

Proof your relationship is real

  • Dated photos together over time, with a short caption under each
  • A few samples of messages and call logs from different months
  • Cards, letters, gifts or money sent to each other
  • Letters from family or friends who know you as a couple

Only if it applies to you

  • Extra information if you met through an international marriage broker, have certain criminal history or filed K-1 petitions before (read the IMBRA part of the instructions)
  • A certified English translation of every document in another language

Stage 2: what your fiancé(e) brings to the embassy interview

After approval, the case moves to the National Visa Center and then to the embassy. Use the embassy's appointment letter and website for the exact list. These are the usual documents.

Appointment

  • Interview appointment letter
  • DS-160 confirmation page
  • Passport, generally valid for at least 6 months beyond your planned stay (some countries are exempt)
  • Visa fee receipt, if you paid ahead
  • Photos, if the embassy asks for them

Civil documents (originals and copies)

  • Birth certificate
  • Divorce or death certificates that ended earlier marriages
  • Police certificates from the countries the embassy lists
  • The translations the embassy requires

Medical exam

  • Results from the embassy's approved panel physician. If you get a sealed envelope, bring it unopened.

Financial support

  • Form I-134 from the U.S. citizen, if the embassy asks, with recent tax returns, pay stubs or a job letter

Your relationship, updated

  • Photos together, including recent ones, with dates and captions
  • Proof of visits and contact since you filed
  • Your wedding plans

Stage 3: after your fiancé(e) arrives

Marry within 90 days of arrival. Then your spouse can apply for a green card with Form I-485. Your marriage certificate and new joint records start that file. Our I-130 and I-485 checklist covers it.

Make your relationship easy to see

Officers review a lot of paper. A clear PDF in date order, with the date, place and names under every photo, lets them see your story in a few minutes instead of digging through loose files.

Case Album builds that PDF from your photos and documents, in your browser. Nothing is uploaded to us. You see every page free and pay only to save the file.

Frequently asked questions

What documents do I need for a K-1 visa?

For Form I-129F: proof of the petitioner's U.S. citizenship, proof that earlier marriages ended, one passport-style photo of each of you, proof you met in person in the last 2 years, signed statements that you will marry within 90 days, and proof your relationship is real. For the embassy interview: passport, DS-160 confirmation, birth certificate, police certificates, medical exam results and, if asked, Form I-134.

Do we need photos for Form I-129F?

Yes. USCIS asks for one color passport-style photo of the petitioner and one of the fiancé(e), taken within 30 days of filing. Relationship photos are separate evidence that you know each other.

How do we prove we met in person?

Send records of your visits, like plane tickets, boarding passes, hotel bookings and passport stamps, together with dated photos of you both from those trips.

Is Form I-134 required for a K-1 visa?

The embassy decides what financial evidence it needs. Many ask for Form I-134 from the U.S. citizen with tax returns and proof of income. Follow your interview letter.
