The limit
USCIS’s general online tips say each file must be 12 MB or smaller, in PDF, JPG or JPEG. A PDF with only 20 full-size phone photos can go over that, because each photo can be several megabytes.
Simple ways to make it smaller
- Resize photos. A photo shown a few inches wide on a page does not need its huge original size.
- Use medium quality, not the lowest. Faces and details must stay clear.
- Remove duplicates and photos that look almost the same.
- Scan documents at a medium setting, like 200 to 300 DPI, and in black and white when color is not needed.
- Split a big album into parts, like “Photos Part 1 of 2”, if your upload screen allows several files.
Check that it is still clear
Open the final PDF at 100% zoom. Make sure faces, text and captions are easy to read. A small file that is hard to read does not help.
The easy way
Case Album sizes each photo for its spot on the page and splits the album into files that are each under 11 MB. It all happens in your browser, so your photos are not uploaded to us.

Frequently asked questions
How do I make a PDF smaller for USCIS?
Make photos smaller, use medium quality, remove duplicates and split big files into numbered parts. Then check that everything is still easy to read.
What if my evidence is bigger than 12 MB?
Upload screens usually allow more than one file per box. Split your proof into clearly named parts, each under the limit, and check your form’s screen.
