What is the limit?

USCIS’s general “Tips for Filing Forms Online” page says each file must be 12 MB or smaller. It lists PDF, JPG and JPEG, and says some forms accept other types. Always check the upload screen for your form.

Why photo files get too big

One phone photo can be several megabytes. A PDF with many full-size photos can go over 12 MB even if it only has a few pages.

How to stay under the limit

  • Use clear photos, but not giant original files.
  • Only use file types your form’s upload screen accepts.
  • If you have many photos, split them into a few clearly named files.
  • Check each file’s size before you upload. 12 MB is the maximum, not a goal.

How Case Album handles it

Case Album makes PDF files that are each under 11 MB, so you have a safe margin below 12 MB. Rules can change by form, so check your account before you upload.

Mailing your case is different

The 12 MB limit is only for online uploads. If you mail your case, follow the mailing instructions. USCIS says not to mail photo albums, scrapbooks or binders.
