Why signatures matter more now
A new rule took effect on **July 10, 2026**. For requests filed on or after that date, USCIS may reject a filing without a valid signature, or deny it even after accepting it. When USCIS denies a case for this reason, it may keep the filing fee.
So a simple signature mistake can now cost you the fee and time. Check every signature before you file.
Paper filings: sign by hand
- Sign in ink, by hand, in the signature box.
- A scan, photocopy or fax of an original handwritten signature is generally accepted, unless the form instructions say otherwise.
- A typed name, a pasted signature image, or a signature made with signing software is not accepted on a paper filing.
- A stamp or auto-pen is not accepted unless the form instructions allow it.
Online filings
When you file through your USCIS online account, you sign electronically inside the system. That electronic signature is valid there. It does not make a typed or digital signature valid on a paper form.
Common mistakes
- Leaving a signature box empty.
- Someone else signing for you, such as a spouse, preparer or attorney, when the form requires your own signature.
- Forgetting other required signatures, such as the sponsor on an Affidavit of Support, or the preparer and interpreter sections.
- Using an old edition of the form or old instructions.
Before you file
Read the signature section of the current instructions for your exact form. If you sign on behalf of someone who cannot sign, follow the instructions for that situation.

Frequently asked questions
Can I type my name as a signature on a USCIS form?
No, not on a paper filing. USCIS does not accept typed names. Sign by hand. A scan or copy of your handwritten signature is generally fine.
Does USCIS accept DocuSign or other e-signatures?
Not on paper filings. Electronic signatures are valid only inside USCIS’s own online filing system.
What happens if my signature is invalid?
For filings from July 10, 2026, USCIS may reject the request, or deny it after accepting it, and may keep the fee.
