Make your relationship photos easy to review

Choose genuine photos from different points in your relationship, put them in date order and add short, accurate captions. A printable album can help organize that part of your evidence. It is not a substitute for the other records your case needs.

  • Use dates, places and names you can support. Do not invent a missing detail.
  • Follow your form instructions or interview notice. USCIS does not set one universal number of relationship photos.
  • Preview the pages before paying. Using an album tool does not improve your legal eligibility or guarantee approval.

The short answer

A Request for Evidence (RFE) after a marriage green card interview means the officer needs specific additional proof before deciding. It is not a denial. Answer exactly what the RFE asks, in its order, with recent and consistent documents, put the RFE on top, and send everything together before the deadline printed on the notice. The same approach works for a marriage RFE that arrives before an interview.

Not every wait after an interview means an RFE

Many cases stay pending for a while after the interview with no RFE at all. The officer may be waiting on background checks, a supervisor's review, a file transfer or, in some categories, an available visa number. Some couples are approved weeks later without being asked for anything else. Check your case status online and watch your mail, but do not assume a delay means a problem.

Why USCIS may ask for more after an interview

  • The officer wants more proof that the marriage is real, for example more recent joint records.
  • Answers at the interview, or documents in the file, did not line up and need explaining.
  • A required document was missing, expired or incomplete, such as financial support documents or a medical exam.
  • A prior marriage, a name change or a civil record needs an official document.

Read the RFE and list every item

  • Write down the deadline printed on the notice and how to respond (mail or online). The deadline is on your notice; do not rely on a general rule.
  • Number every item the RFE asks for, in the same order, using its words.
  • Note any time period it names, such as records from the last six months.
  • Note whether it asks for originals, certified copies or translations.

Common relationship evidence categories

The regulation at 8 CFR 204.2 gives examples of evidence of a real marriage. Match what you send to what the RFE asks for.

Updated joint finances

  • Recent joint bank and credit card statements
  • Your newest joint tax return or IRS transcript
  • Bills you pay together

Updated shared residence

  • Current lease or renewal with both names, or mortgage statements and deed
  • Recent mail and bills to both of you at the same address

Insurance and responsibilities

  • Health, car or renters insurance listing both spouses
  • Beneficiary designations
  • Children's birth certificates or school records listing both parents

Photos and chronology

  • Dated, captioned photos from across the relationship, including recent months Make this part now
  • A short relationship timeline that matches your forms and interview answers

Statements from others

  • Sworn statements from people who know you as a couple, with how they know you, specific examples, their contact details and a copy of their ID

Answer the specific questions

If the RFE names a concern, such as different addresses on two documents or a gap in time living together, answer it directly. A short, signed explanation is fine, but back it with documents, such as a work assignment letter, a second lease or travel records. Explanations without evidence carry less weight.

How to organize the response

  • Put the RFE notice on top. USCIS asks that the response include it and arrive all at one time.
  • Then a short cover letter or list that shows, for each RFE item, which exhibit answers it.
  • Then the exhibits, labeled and in the RFE's order, each group in date order.
  • Keep a full copy of exactly what you sent and proof of delivery or upload.

What not to include

  • Everything you already sent. Resend only what the RFE asks for or what updates it.
  • Documents that do not involve both of you.
  • Statements you cannot support, or guesses about dates.
  • Hundreds of near-identical photos or chat screenshots. Choose a representative, dated selection.

Avoid inconsistent information

Before you send, compare names, dates and addresses across the RFE response, your forms and what you said at the interview. If something was wrong earlier, say so plainly and explain it. An honest correction is better than an unexplained contradiction.

Case Album helps with the parts that are about presentation: it puts your relationship photos in date order with captions and, in the Complete Evidence Package, adds documents as labeled exhibits with an index. It does not decide what you should send.

Consider getting help

If the RFE suggests the officer doubts the marriage itself, mentions fraud, or raises a legal question you do not understand, talk to an immigration attorney before you answer.

Frequently asked questions

Does a delay after the interview mean I will get an RFE?

No. Many cases stay pending after the interview for background checks, review or visa availability, and are approved without an RFE.

How long do I have to answer an RFE?

The deadline is printed on your RFE. Answer before it. Late answers may not be considered.

Can I send my RFE answer in parts?

USCIS generally wants all requested evidence sent together, in one response, with the RFE notice. Follow the instructions on your letter.
