USCIS Evidence PDF Too Large to Upload? A Practical Checklist

Community question explained

Español简体中文Tiếng Việt

This page explains what applicants are reporting. It is not an official USCIS announcement.

Start with the file requirements shown in your own USCIS upload screen. Do not assume a size limit or accepted format from someone else’s form applies to yours. Applicants describe oversized PDFs and repeated upload failures in community discussions; those reports identify a practical problem, not a change in filing rules.

Check these before compressing everything

  1. Confirm that online submission is available for this evidence and follow the actual notice’s submission instructions.
  2. Read the allowed file types and maximum size in the upload screen. Compare the size of each saved file, not just the total folder size.
  3. Use a clear filename and follow any filename restrictions shown by the portal. Check that the PDF opens normally and is not password-protected.
  4. Check that every page is present, upright and readable, including dates, signatures and small print. Keep your original files.

Split logically before losing image quality

If the portal allows multiple files, divide a large packet at document or exhibit boundaries where possible. Give the parts clear names, such as “Response-part-01” and “Response-part-02,” and check their order. When one long document must span files, identify the continuation clearly. Do not leave out evidence just to meet a size limit.

Compression can make scans smaller, but it can also blur small text or signatures. Inspect the saved result at normal viewing size and zoom in on important details. Text-based PDFs may gain little from image compression. Digitally signed originals may need separate handling; a rebuilt copy does not preserve a digital signature.

If the upload still fails

Note the exact error, file size and format. Check the account’s help instructions and try the supported troubleshooting steps. Do not assume a failed upload was received. After a successful submission, save the confirmation and a copy of precisely what you sent. Seek help promptly if a deadline is close.

How Case Album helps

The packet organizer lets you preview the actual PDF, check exhibit order and page numbers, and prepare numbered parts for a size limit you enter. Review every part before submitting it through the method USCIS permits for your case. Case Album does not file anything with USCIS or guarantee that a portal will accept a file.
